For Families

“Caring for my husband during his illness was difficult, tiring, and often frustrating. And yet, it was very rewarding. Still, there were some days when I didn’t think I was going to survive myself! I finally realized that I couldn’t do it all and asked for help. With the support of friends and resources in our community, I was able to provide the care and loving attention he needed.”

Providing care for a family member with a serious illness can be more than a full-time job. It is stressful—so stressful that the person providing the primary care for a loved one sometimes gets sick themselves. Even though you may think you can “do it all” or that your family member “only wants you” to do the caregiving, asking for help can be the most important thing you do for yourself and everyone involved.

For local help, advice, and information to make your caregiving job easier and more rewarding for you and the person you’re caring for, this website has educational articles on physical care, on nutrition and eating, on managing pain, and on the different types of care that are available. Our Community Programs section lists services offered in Lane county.
